He did not take office after winning the election in February.
Ecuador’s National Police announced Monday morning an attack against Luis Sonillo, the mayor of Duran Canton in Guayas province, in which one person was killed and five others were injured.
The interior minister, Juan Zapata, explained that the dead man was police corporal Jorge Tama, “a member of the mayor’s security team.”
Earlier, before reporting the officer’s death, the officer pointed out that six people were injured in the attack and were shifted to health homes.
The police explained that the vehicle in which Sonillo was traveling in was attacked and he escaped unhurt.
Police General Commander Fausto Salinas said they had launched “investigative and operational measures” to find those responsible for the incident.
The mayor’s office said in a statement that the attack occurred as the burgomaster, who was sworn in on Sunday, was on his way to city hall to inaugurate the first session of the city council.
“In view of this unfortunate fact, we are hereby informed that today’s Council session has been suspended to protect the safety of the new officers,” the company’s statement said.
Sonillo was elected mayor of Durán in Ecuadorian regional elections held on February 5. According to the official results of the National Electoral Council (CNE), the burgomaster now received 51,210 votes in favor (36.08% of the vote).
