Over 90 killed in suspension bridge collapse in India (+ videos)

Dozens of people in India have died after a suspension bridge collapsed on the Machu River in the city of Morbi (Gujarat state) on Sunday, local channel Ndtv reported. Currently, the death toll stands at 91.

About 500 people were on the bridge when it collapsed. Currently, more than 100 people are estimated to be trapped in the rubble. Rescue work is currently underway.

State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi explained that the accident occurred at around 6:30 pm (local time), when about 150 people were at the construction site, clarifying that most of the victims could be rescued. ANI Company.

The Indian Express reported that 79 people have been admitted to hospital, more than 60 of whom are in critical condition, Morbi District Medical Officer PK Dhitrejia.

Meanwhile, several people who fell into the river were seen swimming to safety after the work collapsed, while another group of victims clung to one end of the partially submerged bridge.

The country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already held a conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in which he urged him to urgently mobilize rescue teams. Patel promised 4 million rupees ($48,000) to the families of the dead and 50,000 rupees (about $607) to the injured from the local government.
