On a dark morning on September 11, 1982, a terrible discovery shook the city of Quito. In the city's old zoo, a guard named Floresmilo Bolanos saw an unspeakable horror: the mutilated body of 23-year-old university student Ivan Ekas lay inside a cage of lions. The scene is Dantesque: cats devour his corpse, children wait their turn and a woman plays with one of Egos' shoes.

Officials initially ruled Egas' death a tragic suicide. According to the official version, the young man entered the cage drunk and depressed, and was attacked by lions. However, many contradictions in the case and evidence emerging from the community point towards a dark murder conspiracy.
The story, which made headlines in local newspapers at the time, recently went viral on X (formerly Twitter). David Revelo, a user who creates texts about crime and shocking stories, created investigative work based on the nation's newspaper archives to reconstruct the event. In a conversation with Infobae, Revelo mentioned that he creates texts because he likes to write, but he says that “all these stories are always structured by strong and timeless fundamental issues, things that I think about and happen regardless of society or time.”: impunity, abuse of power, death, pain, joy. And those universal things I want to highlight in what I'm saying.”
The first rumors of the crime centered on military lieutenant Pedro Llarenas, who was said to have planned Egas' death due to an alleged affair between him and his wife, Lilia. Testimony indicated that in an act of jealous revenge, Lorenas used military resources to pursue Egas on the night he died.
