Winter warnings extended to 9 western US states.

(CNN) — As a powerful atmospheric river begins to move toward the coast through California, heavy snow is spreading across the western United States. Nine states are currently under some form of winter weather advisory in conjunction with the storm.

Over 2,134 meters, heavy snowfall is taking place across the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Half a meter to 1 meter of snow is expected at an elevation of 2,100 meters. Snowfall can reach 0.5 to 1 meter at altitudes of 2,400 meters or more. Snowfall above 2,700 meters is forecast to be between 1.8 and 2.4 metres. Wind gusts of up to 120 kmph are also expected to create white storm conditions.

Snowfall also continues in parts of Nevada, Oregon and Idaho, where 6 to 12 inches is possible at low elevations, and two feet is possible in higher elevations. The snow is expected to move into Utah, western Colorado and Montana by early Friday morning, where up to two feet of snow is possible.

The storm system is triggering a Winter Weather Watch from South Dakota to Connecticut, but there is no Winter Weather Watch for New York at this time. The storm is not associated with a powerful atmospheric river that is moving westward. Storm totals range from 5 to 2 inches of snow in the past 24 hours. Isolated amounts of 6 to 8 inches of snow were reported along the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin
