(CNN Spanish) — The General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) said in a statement that an airport security officer died this Wednesday morning along with a group of people who tried to steal a valuable truck inside the Arturo Merino Benitez Airport in Santiago de Chile. Posted on Twitter.
The agency expressed regret over the death of the officer, identified as Claudio Alejandro Villar Rodríguez, and said they would work with the appropriate authorities to clarify the truth.
During an event for International Women’s Day, Chile’s President Gabriel Boric spoke about the incident at Santiago airport and confirmed that “one criminal was also killed”.
“An attack on the airport slab, where the criminals shot dead a DGAC officer, and a criminal was also killed as a result of the confrontation (…) When there is insecurity, everything else falters. Today they managed these two attacks. Frustrated but at a very high cost, they have been mostly women, “From our government we are going to pursue crime with relentless justice,” Boric said.
The chief prosecutor of Pudahuel commune, Eduardo Baeza, commented this Wednesday that the robbery attempt took place at 7:50 a.m. (local time) and that there were 10 people who went to the place in three or four trucks. Attack attempt.
The armored truck in the attempted robbery was transporting approximately US$32 million from Miami to various banks in Chile.
An investigation is underway to establish all the details related to the incident.
Meanwhile, the director of the DGAC, Raúl Jorquera, said this Wednesday that the criminals were going with “high firepower” and “planning”, but the training and arming of elements of the leadership helped to defeat the robbery.
“Some criminals with complete commitment, planning and high firepower to try to rob the scheduled bond transport that day. DGAC, as a result of its experience in this area, has strengthened it. Mechanized security has provided training equipment to our personnel. This is how our people are able to foil this robbery attempt today. It ended up being a desperate robbery and unfortunately one of our officers died,” he said.
For her part, Chilean Defense Minister Maya Fernandez noted that the training and weaponry of the security forces had been improved, which was able to prevent the attack; However, he said that no armed attack should be carried out inside the airport.
“Not only was security strengthened in formation, (but) in terms of weapons in this case, it was able to prevent the fact of what was going to happen and make a change (…) But what to do? It will never happen that the airport was attacked with weapons,” he commented.
