The death toll from the typhoon in Brazil has risen to 12

The death toll from a tropical cyclone that passed through the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul rose to 12 on Sunday, after authorities found the lifeless body of a man in a municipality in the region.

According to the latest Civil Defense report, the number of missing persons has been significantly reduced to five from 15 reported on Saturday.

The last fatality is located in Kara, where rescue teams continue to search for five missing people in the town.

Nearly 4,500 people were evacuated from their homes in about 40 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, a state bordering Uruguay and Argentina, which was hit by the strong storm.

The cyclone’s passage along the coast of the region caused landslides, flooding, power outages in thousands of homes and severe damage to roads.

The Brazilian military has been mobilized to support rescue efforts in the hardest-hit cities, such as Sao Leopoldo, where some neighborhoods have been cut off by flooding.

“At this time, our main objective is to protect and protect human lives. Rescue isolated people, find missing people and give our full support to families,” Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Light told reporters.

Leid flew to the most affected areas the day before, along with Ministers Paulo Pimenta from the Social Communication Secretariat of the President and Antônio Waldez Góes from Cohesion and Regional Development.

The two ministers reaffirmed President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s commitment to provide “full support” and a “rapid response” to municipalities affected by the typhoon, which brought heavy rain and winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour in a short period of time. .
