Lt. Deanna Thomes explained at a news conference Sunday afternoon that police arrived at the home around 8:30 a.m. but left because no one answered the door. He noted that the initial call came from someone anonymous and officers had no reason to enter the home.
Officers returned the call at 9:15 a.m. and were able to speak with the caller. On entering, they found four lifeless people stabbed to death, identified as a wife and three children aged 10, 12 and 17. Her husband was also found dead.
A preliminary investigation revealed the man had stabbed his wife and three children, according to the lieutenant. When asked if the husband had stabbed himself, he said the cause of death was being investigated.
According to Thoms, the residence had no history of domestic calls, and police had no motive for the murders.
CBS News reports that authorities said witnesses reported an argument at the home early Sunday morning.
Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan said the five deaths mark one of the worst mass killings in Hawaii since the “Xerox murders” on Nov. 2, 1999, when Brian Koji Uyezuki shot and killed seven co-workers, including his supervisor.
