The northeastern Brazilian state of Alachuas declared a state of emergency in 29 cities on Saturday due to heavy rains that have affected 16,000 people and killed one person since Friday.
Gov. Paulo Dantas declared a “state of emergency” through an executive order valid for 180 days, which will ease the bureaucracy to allocate resources and quickly deliver aid to rain-affected communities.
The regional civil defense said in its most recent bulletin on Saturday that 14,338 people had to leave their homes due to flood and landslide risks and another 2,085 people lost everything due to the rain.
Some communities are isolated and only accessible by boat or helicopter after several rivers overflowed, and one person in the municipality of Joaquim Gomes was swept away and died.
According to the National Meteorological Centre, rains are forecast to continue till Sunday in most parts of the state.
