De’Sean Perry’s parents thanked the South Florida and Charlottesville communities for their support since the shooting, according to their attorney, Michael Haggard.

“On behalf of De’Sean’s parents, Happy and Sean Perry, and their entire family, we thank the South Florida and Charlottesville communities for their outpouring of support during this incredibly sad time,” Haggard told CNN in a statement.

In the statement, Perry’s parents said they would not speak publicly about their son’s death out of respect for the University of Virginia community, which “may be horrified by another mass shooting in America.”

Perry, a junior, is a Virginia linebacker who has played in 15 games over the past three seasons. On Saturday against Pittsburgh, he had two tackles in a 37-7 loss.
