A woman who, along with her partner, gave her 11-year-old daughter to a man in exchange for a vehicle and money, has arrested three accused of raping and abusing the girl, authorities said Thursday.
“The mother of an 11-year-old minor, along with her accomplice, the minor's stepfather, received a motor vehicle and money monthly to allow the arrested man to abuse her daughter,” Defense Minister Gustavo Sanchez said.
The case shocked Hondurans in the community of Judiaba, a department of El Paraiso, 80 km east of Tegucigalpa.
“They were held in custody on the grounds that they were responsible for a series of rapes.” […] Minor,” argued the minister.
“The girl is under the protection of the government,” said Yahdai Varela, a spokesman for the child welfare secretary.
According to the National Autonomous University of Honduras' violence watchdog, the Central American country is “the most dangerous” for women in Latin America. In 2023, 380 femicides were recorded, compared to 308 in 2022.
