Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi submitted his resignation on Thursday afternoon after losing the support of the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) coalition, although it was not accepted by the country’s President Sergio Mattarella.
Draghi, who was the head of the European Central Bank, will lead the coalition government from February 2021.
He announced his resignation after the M5S did not take part in a confidence vote in the Italian Senate this Thursday, distancing himself from other government partners.
“This afternoon I want to announce that I will hand in my resignation to the president. Today’s vote in parliament is a significant event from a political point of view,” Draghi told a cabinet meeting in Rome.
Even if he decides to resign, Draghi still has a majority in parliament. However, he has previously said that he cannot rule without the support of the M5S.
“The trust agreement based on the government’s action has come to an end,” he said.
Inflation crisis
The latest problems between Draghi and the M5S are related to the mandate, which includes measures to control the inflationary tide affecting Italy. The party sees the Prime Minister’s actions as insufficient.
In addition, they had disagreements over the financing of a waste incinerator to be installed in the Italian capital.
The resignation was submitted to Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday He decided not to accept itHe is asking Draghi to address parliament to assess the political situation and check whether he still has the majority to form a government.
A decision by the Italian legislature is scheduled for March 2023.
