A federal judge in Mexico ordered Ovidio Guzmán López, son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, detained pending extradition this Friday, to remain in Altiplano’s maximum security prison pending the process of extraditing him to the United States. States, local newspapers report.
The move responds to an extradition request from the US government and establishes a 60-day deadline for that country to submit relevant documents to enable extradition.
Ovidio Guzmán, alias ‘el Ratón’, was arrested this Thursday in Sinaloa and later transferred to the Altiplano prison in the state of Mexico. Following his arrest, a federal judge temporarily halted any efforts to extradite the crime boss to the United States.
Delivery request
In a press conference this Friday, the Mexican government submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a request for the temporary detention of Guzmán López for purposes of extradition for drug crimes, beginning in September 2019.
Pending the development of this process, son “Chappo” has been arrested for crimes committed in delicto, although there are open investigations for crimes against health and possession of firearms.
