The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) called for urgent action to stop “sophisticated” groups of “South American thieves” from continuing to rob California residents.

According to the LA Times, the number of criminals from South America has increased in the United States over the past five years. The LAPD believes they are traveling for the sole purpose of committing “robberies” on “upscale residents.” LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton clarified that these groups have become more active in recent months.

“The number of crimes associated with this type of gang is increasing exponentially. “They often target houses connected to open fields, sidewalks and valleys that give them access,” Hamilton said, noting that the thieves were mostly South Americans, but not much doubt.

The LAPD explained that these groups hit wealthy neighborhoods to steal valuables so they can get money to send back home. They almost always attack unarmed and use jamming devices to enter homes.

The issue was assessed at Tuesday's Police Commission meeting, which will include a task force formed to address the issue.

Which countries are in focus?

An article in the Los Angeles Times collected statements from some LAPD deputies concerned about the issue. The focus is on Chilean criminals, but also on those from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

The trans-Andean country is being targeted because of the ease with which its citizens can obtain tourist visas. For example, benefits include not requesting background information.

Relatedly, Todd Spitzer, an attorney representing Orange County, sued the federal government for not disclosing negotiations with Chile over visa requirements for travelers.
