A popular Nigerian transgender man was sentenced to six months in prison without fine this Friday after a local court found him throwing money into the air, a practice known as a 'spray', local media reported.
It is illegal in this African country to 'splash' the Nigerian national currency, the Naira, in general, especially at parties.
Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, started his trouble last month when he threw money at the premiere of the much-anticipated movie. Videos of the incident were widely shared on social media, which may have pressured the authorities to take action. However, Bobrisky may appeal the court's decision, some lawyers believe.
In its ruling, the court assumed that the jail term would begin on March 24, 2024, the date of his arrest.

“The act of vandalizing naira notes has become a constant menace to damage the reputation of the country,” Justice Abimbola Awokboro said. “Enough of people tampering and manipulating our currencies. “It has to come to an end,” he said.
Bobrisky, who underwent surgery in 2021, has always sparked controversy for appearing in feminine clothing at public events. Although the transvestite star self-identifies as a “man,” media outlets such as the AP and AFP show her as a “transgender woman.”
