Chinese mogul Guo Wengui transferred millions to Bannon, Fox, Gettr and Docs Show

A Chinese businessman accused of funneling millions of illicit dollars into the bank accounts of some of the MAGA World's most influential figures — including former Trump aides Steve Bannon and Jason Miller — according to a trove of documents filed in federal court in February.

The materials represent an attempt by the court-appointed trustee in the bankruptcy case of Gu Wengui, an anti-Chinese Communist Party billionaire, to recover money Gu allegedly diverted as part of a “fraudulent scheme” to hide wealth from his creditors.

Go has long bankrolled Bannon and Miller's post-White House endeavors — even as critics accuse the former construction mogul of serving as a secret double agent for Beijing — and the feds allege he embezzled more than $1 billion from Chinese dissidents in the diaspora.

Guo has denied all these allegations, portraying himself as a victim of elaborate conspiracies.

Among the guardian's biggest targets is Gettr, The troubled Twitter alternative that Guo launched with Miller in 2021, from which the moderator is seeking to recover a whopping $21 million.

“Over the course of years, the debtor orchestrated a ‘game of chance,’ using a complex network of shell companies, nominally owned by family members and subordinates, but in reality, controlled by the debtor,” the legal filing said. “The Debtor, through his shell company Hamilton Opportunity Fund SPC ('Hamilton'), transferred funds in the amount of US$21,000,000 after… [bankruptcy] Petition history.”

This language is repeated in hundreds of filings submitted by the trustee, with few additional details, and with only the names and financial amounts changed. Many of the defendants are major companies such as FedEx and American Express, or shadowy business entities based in the United Kingdom, the Cayman Islands, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, and mainland China.

But in all cases, the targeted parties allegedly received money from Guo that actually belonged to the fallen mogul's lenders, his victims, and to the New York court that awarded him $134 million in contempt penalties.

The materials also reveal enduring ties between Guo and key players on the American right. They show that Bannon's strategic advisers, former longtime White House strategists, received $850,000 from two of Go's companies shortly before filing for bankruptcy. Bannon's spokesman did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Meanwhile, Miller personally received $353,269.23 from Joe, while his former firm Jamestown Associates, which served the Trump campaign in 2016 and 2020, received $104,691.25. Fox News received $264,113.25.

Miller confirmed that the money he received was put into his official compensation package as CEO of GETTR.

“This is ridiculous,” Miller said in a statement. “All the money I earned in my role as CEO of GETTR was specifically identified in my contract and was for services provided. We will oppose this prosecution.”

In text messages with The Daily Beast, a longtime Trump adviser confirmed that Jamestown created ads for Gettr that Fox aired.

“All services were performed, and all were highly documented,” Miller wrote in explaining the payments. “It's so ridiculous.”

Neither Fox nor Jamestown responded to requests for comment from The Daily Beast. Nor was that the case for Gettr itself, which Miller left last year to join the former president's bid to return.

The trustee is also seeking to recover $300,000 paid by an NGO led by Guo Washington Times Columnist Bill Geertz's nonprofit The Geertz File Investigative Reporting Project, which pays the salaries of Geertz and his wife. Gettr and Bannon helped found the NGO in question, the Rule of Law Foundation, and its sister organization, the Rule of Law Association, in 2018. The Department of Justice has since identified both groups and Gettr as part of the criminal conspiracy through which Gu allegedly enriched himself at the expense of Anti-communist activists.

The revelation accepted by Geertz A Loan of $100,000 of an aide to Guo cost him his job at the Washington Free Beacon in 2019. Gertz did not respond to questions from The Daily Beast. Frequent emails to Washington TimesThe press account also went unanswered.

Notably absent from the list of defendants are Donald Trump Jr. and former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro, whom the trustee identified as potential targets of subpoenas in a draft document filed in January.
