The death toll from a tropical cyclone in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul rose to 15 on Tuesday, according to the latest bulletin from the territory’s civil defense.
It also pointed out that only one resident of the city of Kara, which has a population of around eight thousand, is missing.
More than 3,200 people have been left homeless and about 300 have been displaced by the severe storm in Rio Grande do Sul and another state, Santa Catarina, state news agency Agencia Brasil said.
This last region recorded no deaths or disappearances due to the climatic event. Till last Sunday, the level of flood water in the municipalities had receded and the authorities were working to rescue the landslide affected areas.
Rio’s civil defense system advises people who want to return to their residences to first check the structure and safety conditions.
“Clean the area and all items that came in contact with the water. Inform the authorities if you find risks”, warns the agency quoted by Últimas Noticias.
The National Center for Risk Management and Natural Disasters said the cyclone had moved offshore and there would be concern over low temperatures as winter sets in.
