Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Monday criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s claim that Hitler had “Jewish blood” and called the Russian ambassador for “explanations.”
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Israel has sought to maintain a subtle balance between Kiev and Moscow, but Lavrov’s words have provoked outrage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr “Zhelensky puts forward this argument: what if Nazism were a Jew (in Ukraine)?” Lavrov said as he copied it on his ministry website. He added: “I may be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood.”
Lapidet condemned in a brief statement that “Minister Lavrov’s comments are outrageous, unforgivable and a terrible historical mistake,” calling on the Russian ambassador to Israel to “clarify.”
Danny Dayan, the leader of the Yat Vachchem, the Israeli monument to Showa, condemned Lavrov’s comments, saying they were “baseless, illusory and dangerous.”
In a speech to Israeli parliamentarians in late March, Zhelensky called on Israel to “make a decision” in favor of Ukraine against Russia and demanded the supply of arms.
Israeli officials have provided security equipment to Ukraine, but recently did not supply arms to the country, Israeli officials said.
