Brazil: Man kills four children after entering nursery with ax (+ video)

A man with an ax killed four children and injured at least three others when he entered a day care center in southern Brazil on Wednesday, authorities said.

Jorginho Mello, governor of Santa Catarina state, confirmed the murders in Blumenau on his Twitter account and wrote that the killer had been arrested. Firefighters confirmed the man was hit with an ax and three children were taken to hospital.

Television footage showed parents crying in front of a private nursery called Continho do Bom Pastor. Local press reported that the man climbed a wall to enter the nursery brandishing an axe.

Attacks on schools are rare in Brazil, but have become more frequent in recent years. Last week, a student stabbed a teacher to death and injured several others in Sao Paulo.

“May God comfort the hearts of all families at this time of deep pain,” Governor Mello tweeted.

The military police and the secretary of state’s defense did not immediately respond to requests for additional information from The Associated Press.

Blumenau, a city of 366,000 inhabitants, is famous for its annual Oktoberfest festival.
