Surely you’ve heard them say “What a Simba” in Colombia., denoting something good or excellent. However, we inform you that no matter how funny or good it is, it is misused. It actually has a dark meaning.

For Colombians, that expression is similar to referring to something “cool” in Mexico, but it is not the same as the opinion of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE). The system is Simba a “Handmade gun”.

The RAE records that it is most common in Honduras, where it is offered for military use. So, the next time you listen to a Colombian, tell him what uses it has.

Colombian Meanings of the Word ‘Simba’

The word can also be used in the masculine language, and it has many meanings in other countries. However, it is not known how it came to Colombia or how its inhabitants began to say:

  • In Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela it is a “dessert made with eggs, almonds and syrup”.
  • In Basque it means “the name of several kinds of birds: shrike, redstart, warbler”.
  • In Peru, “the opposite bank of the river” or “the head, the upper part of the human body.”
