Title Secret New York City It was unmistakable, as were those from several other sources, including New York Post:
“The last stand-alone payphone in New York City has been officially removed”
“But was it???” asked reader Allison McGuigan in an email to WSR. “I live on West End Ave/93 and there is a phone booth at WEA/90 (photo above)! Is this some kind of parody art installation or the last phone booth in NYC/Manhattan?”
Yes, Alison. There is a phone booth.
In fact, there are still four victors, all on the Upper West Side, all on West End, at 66th, 90th, 100th, and 101st Streets. We took a short ride and checked them out. None of the stalls had doors. Three of the phones were dial tones, one died. We only had a quarter, who took the phone, then asked for an extra 50 cents, and then fell silent.
In case you still thought it might be an illusion, Alison, below are photos to prove their existence. But why were they saved? We’ve researched the highs and lows, then found the answer in our archives!
