The US government on Monday launched a campaign to improve legal migration routes, backed by embassies in various Latin American countries, a top official said.

The State Department, along with the Department of Homeland Security, will also initiate “new actions” in connection with immigrant processing centers established in Guatemala, Colombia and Costa Rica and the CBP One phone app promoted by the government as the only legal way to seek asylum at the U.S. border.

“We want to underscore the presence of these safe, orderly and legal channels throughout the region so that immigrants have the opportunity (to come to the U.S.) without engaging in organized crime,” said Blas Nunez-Neto, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Under Secretary for Border Policy and Immigration.

In turn, the official announced, there will be new announcements about family reunification programs that allow relatives of U.S. citizens to immigrate to the U.S. and have been expanded by the Biden administration to include people from Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The campaign comes ahead of a meeting of officials from Mexico, Canada and the United States in Mexico City, where they will discuss how to combat fentanyl trafficking and increase cooperation on immigration matters.

A senior U.S. official explained that the meetings will aim to advance commitments made by the three countries in recent months, reach new agreements to combat drug trafficking, stop the flow of weapons from the U.S. to Mexico, and improve the situation for migrants.
