Season 3 of “Girls5Eva” is an immediate shot of pure joy

Season 3 of “Girls5Eva” is an immediate shot of pure joy

It is often said that we live in the darkest timeline, or at least that we live in the stupidest. We live with an underdeveloped economy that places a greater burden on those least able to pay, we live with a media ecosystem that is slowly draining the life out of corporatization, and every two weeks or so, JK Rowling's heart grows crueler and crazier. Maybe it's both: the darkest and most stupid timeline. It certainly explains the rise of contemporary comedies such as The bear, cutting their humor with so much drama that they became dramatic plays. There's nothing wrong with that; Culture transforms in response to the world. As our world becomes dumber and darker, perhaps we become more resilient so as not to be so vulnerable. Pure silliness may seem too childish and make us feel too open to attack. Maybe we struggle to see the value of a belly laugh when we're surrounded by creeping boredom, as if it might be inappropriate to laugh. I can't thank you enough Girls5Eva It's enough for him to come to our rescue with a straight shot of silliness and fun to break up the drudgery.

Finally, after a nearly two-year hiatus, this hit show was canceled by Peacock and then rescued by Netflix, Girls5EvaThe triumphant return is here. It's season three, baby, and damn if it's not the best yet. The story of this pop group's midlife reinvention continues as they head on the road for an exhilarating tour across (some) the country on their way to their dream concert at Radio City Music Hall. Name of their tour? Why, Return naturally! Girls5Eva and Girls5Eva They're at their best when they're overcoming obstacles on their way to regaining their pop stardom, so the combination of “Comeback” and “Immortality” is the perfect choice for a band that keeps coming back. And you what else? Fun wordplay! That's right, there's nothing deeper here. The wordplay is great no matter how many times they mention the joke titles Return or last night Or “Marriott Divorced Parents Suites,” she giggled. This pure, focused silliness has penetrated my writing tendencies to intellectualize what I watch and given me a charming chatter.

like never eva, Girls5Eva It bears the twin marks of a Tina Fey/Robert Carlock-style comedy: joke-a-second structure and a deep look at celebrity culture. The constant back-and-forth that can threaten to overwhelm a viewer may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it can be an exhilarating thing to give in to and ride the wave. As for the show's celebrity reality, it's as silly and hilarious as ever. We get, among other things, an amazing riff on the Harry Styles baby archetype that sees the British pop star sing songs about being sensitive Boy in a jacket“A precocious saccharine pop anthem for kids.”Sweet'N Low Daddy“, and a parody of the Jewel/Joan Osbourne sound that unfortunately isn't on Spotify, but really needs to be heard. This show is just a shot of pure joy.

All the characters find themselves at their own crossroads. Dawn (Sarah Bareilles) is pregnant, misses her family terribly, and works to fend for herself often. In one episode, she confronts a southern state senator (John Early) who intervenes in Down's pregnancy as an advocate for “fetal citizens” and shames Mike Pence by calling his wife “mother” in German. Gloria (Paula Bell) and Summer (Busy Phillipps) discover who they are and what they want in the wake of major breakups. Gloria embarks on a quest to house more than 150 types of women (using a spreadsheet that you simply have to pause the show to read) and Summer faces an identity crisis that leaves her drawn to a turquoise-jeweled biker played by Paul Dinello. Wiki (a transcendent Renée Elise Goldsberry) grapples with, as she puts it, “being upper-middle class in suburban Maryland.” I'm not saying that Wiki and I are kindred spirits, but when they visited my actual hometown of Clarksville, MD, I probably screamed. I have to say that even though the entire cast seems more comfortable in their roles and funnier than ever, Goldsberry is outdoing each other this season, and if she doesn't get an Emmy for this work, I'll be up in arms. Goldsberry has enormous influence as an actress on Broadway, and the way she commits so unfettered to every part of Wickie, especially her singing, cements her alongside Jenna Maroney in my personal Mount Rushmore of monster icons of fictional fame.

If I had to quibble that this review couldn't just be a straight tongue bath, I would say that there seems to be a bit of Less music this chapter. The original songs we get are great, but I wanted more! Taken with a smaller supporting cast and a shorter season (we only got six precious episodes), you can feel some new boundaries limiting the production. However, to the show's credit, it doesn't seem any less funny, prosperous, or enjoyable.

Joining the Netflix factory pool has drawbacks like these, however Girls5Eva He rolls with it so well you might not even notice. I wondered if the show was pressured to deliver Netflix content when Streamberry, Netflix alters its alter ego Black mirrorshowed up and Dawn was blown away by the new season the crownBut the show handles this well. As is the case in 30 RockRight now, product placement is being taken in stride and turned into a knowing joke. While Wickie is in the boardroom trying to sell a documentary tour to Streamberry, the platform is being bought and sold several times, with new executives being replaced. It's this kind of foolishness backed by an intelligent outlook that recognizes how bad the world is right now that seems like an impossible balance.

In just six episodes, you can cruise through an entire season without even realizing you're doing so. Given this brevity, I understand wanting to savor the show, but I wasn't quite able to stop. At the end of each episode, I was thrilled by how much I laughed and couldn't stop downloading the next episode. This season of Girls5Eva It's the best and most powerful, and my only real complaint is: when will we get more?!
