Turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore left one person dead and 71 others injured, the airline said on Tuesday.
The Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok, Singapore Airlines said on its Facebook page. The airline said there were 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.
The deceased was a 73-year-old British man, Suvarnabhumi Airport General Manager Kittipong Kittikachorn said on Tuesday.
The flight landed in Bangkok at 3:45 PM local time (4:45 AM ET) this Tuesday.
“As of 7:50pm Singapore time on May 21, 2024, 18 people have been hospitalized. A further 12 people are receiving treatment in hospitals,” Singapore Airlines said in a later update.
“The remaining passengers and crew are being screened and, if necessary, will receive treatment at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok,” the company said in its statement.
Singapore President Tharman Shanmukaratnam released a statement on his social media accounts in which he “expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.”
“We don’t have details of the victims, but government ministries and agencies and Singapore Airlines are doing their best to support all those affected and are working with the authorities in Bangkok, where the flight was diverted,” Shanmugaratnam said.
Singapore’s Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat posted a statement on his social media saying he was “deeply saddened to learn of this incident”.
“Ministry of Transport Singapore, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport authorities and SIA staff. [Singapore Airlines]”They are providing support to the affected passengers and their families,” he announced.
Turbulence occurs when an aircraft flies between air masses moving at very different speeds.
In mild to moderate turbulence, passengers may feel the seat belt pull and loose objects may move around the cabin.
But in severe cases, turbulence can throw passengers through the cabin, causing serious injury and sometimes death.
