One dead in Russia’s largest drone strike in Ukraine capital

Local officials say the Ukrainian capital has come under the heaviest drone attack since the start of the Russian war, as Kiev prepares to celebrate the anniversary of its founding on Sunday.

At least one person was killed, but officials said a large number of drones were shot down in a bid to expand Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Russia carried out its “biggest attack” overnight on Saturday with Iranian-made Shahed drones, said Serhii Babko, a senior military officer at Q.

The attack lasted more than five hours and the anti-aircraft defenses reportedly shot down more than 40 drones.

A 41-year-old man died and a 35-year-old woman was hospitalized after debris fell on a seven-story non-residential building and caught fire, city mayor Vitaly Klitschko said.

The building of the Ukrainian Association for the Blind was damaged by the wreckage of the drone.

The record of Shahid drone strikes across the country was also broken on Saturday night, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Of the 59 drones launched, 58 were shot down by anti-aircraft defenses, civil servants said.
