A 13-year-old boy was killed and four others injured on Tuesday after a sword-wielding man attacked several people in the east London suburb of Hainault.
A 36-year-old man was detained at the scene and police said the incident was not being treated as an act of terrorism. Two police officers were hospitalized with stab wounds.
Chief Constable Stuart Bell said the incident was “truly horrific”.
“I can't even imagine how the victims must be feeling,” he said at the doors of the homes where the attacks took place.
Metropolitan police said a vehicle crashed into a house on a residential street and several people were stabbed near the Hainault metro station early Tuesday morning.
No further details were immediately available.
Video published by the British press showed a man in a yellow mask walking near houses in the area carrying a sword or long knife.
Witnesses said they heard officers yelling for the suspect to drop the gun as they chased him.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the incident “shocking” and said “this kind of violence has no place on our streets”.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ade Adelegun said police do not believe there is a threat to the community as a whole. “We are not looking for more suspects,” he said. The incident does not appear to be terror-related.
Transport for London has closed the area of Hainault tube station due to a police investigation.
