Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is due to appear in the National Court on July 2 for the pending case against two men who uploaded pornographic videos online using 'deepfake' technology.
The local agency Ansa reported that the summons to testify as a witness of the prosecution became known during the hearing held this Tuesday as part of the case involving a man aged 73 and 40 and his son from 2020. respectively.
Originally from Sassari (on the island of Sardinia), the two were accused of editing and publishing the images on an American adult site, where they remained online for months and were viewed by millions of people around the world.
La Repubblica newspaper reported that the prime minister, who was out of office at the time, filed a complaint after discovering that some of his collaborators had spread the information.
The police, who covered both of these things through the profile on the porn site, were later able to trace the phone number of the mobile device used to post the videos.
The house of one of them was raided and, according to the charges, the apparent scenes were altered with the help of graphic software.
As part of the lawsuit, Meloni sought 100,000 euros (about $108,000) in damages for defamation.
According to her lawyer, Maria Giulia Marongiu, the money will go to the solidarity fund for victims of violence, which “should be a message to all women who suffer from this kind of abuse, so that they are not afraid to report it.”
Meanwhile, the defense lawyer for the accused, Mauricio Serra, has requested a conditional release for the oldest of his clients. A judge will decide next week whether to grant the request.
