Hamas released a statement after a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and other Iranian officials crashed on Sunday.

Details of the accident are still unclear. Hamas expressed “solidarity” with the president and the “fraternal Iranian people”.

“In this painful incident, we express our full solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran, its leaders, its government and its people, and we ask Almighty Allah to protect and guarantee the safety of the Iranian president and his accompanying delegation, and to save them all from harm from the fraternal Iranian people.” A Hamas statement said.

Some context: Tensions remain high across the Middle East as Israel wages war in Gaza against Iran’s ally, the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Meanwhile, the decades-long conflict between Israel and Iran erupted in April, when Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel. Tehran said the attack was in response to an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Syria. The exchange further fueled tensions in the Middle East.

Iran-allied groups such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon are also trying to escalate conflicts in the region.
