President Joe Biden’s administration announced Thursday that a new list of pending immigration cases seeking asylum will be expedited in United States (US) immigration courts.

The move would cut the time it takes to process some single adults’ asylum applications from years to months.
Immigrants who settle in five cities — Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York — will be placed on a “newcomer list,” through which judges are expected to rule on their applications within 180 days.
Average waiting time for asylum
An immigrant must wait an average of four years to receive a response to their asylum application.
Congestion in the courts is believed to be a suitable incentive for more people to come to the country, especially those whose petitions lack solid foundation.
Officials said they don’t know how many cases they will process, making it difficult to estimate the potential impact. The judiciary appointed 10 judges for the initiative.
