Huawei has just announced its latest phone, the Pura 70 range. There are plenty of updates and improvements, including a retractable zoom lens, but the company has also introduced a key communications feature: Satellite+ will allow images to be sent via satellite when there's no cellular connection.
This is a first for a feature phone, and follows last fall's announcement of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro which was also a world first, in this case the first to enable satellite phone calls. This capability is also present in the new Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.
The new model's photo sending feature is also offered as something to use in emergency situations, when you're in a place with no cellular connection. To send images via satellite, with limited bandwidth, the files are highly compressed, which can cause the image to be distorted or blurred. Hence, it has been emphasized that this feature is intended for use in emergency situations only.
To fully use it, the sending and receiving phones require a specific application called Changlian. If the phone you're sending the message to doesn't have it, as Huawei's Bruce Lee explains, the recipient will only see a regular text message.
However, this is a very big step forward, and extremely valuable if you can, for example, show your location in a way that makes it easy for emergency services to locate you.
Other details have been revealed so far, as I spotted Huawei Central, include the fact that you can edit the message after you send it. It also explains that “Huawei Pura 70 Ultra also supports wireless connectivity with the help of advanced fusion (Lingxi Antenna, Lingxi Network, Lingxi AI algorithm) for a better, stable and robust connection experience under weak signal conditions.”
Huawei also released video Show how it is used.
Apple's satellite connection was groundbreaking, offering intelligent software to help users point their iPhone directly at a satellite passing through an invisible sky. There have been many stories of lives saved using this feature.
So, seeing something more advanced coming to Huawei phones will definitely make Apple and its competitors think about what they can do.
By the way, if you notice a different branding on the latest phones, well done. The Pura 70 is the direct sequel to last year's P60. This fall, we may see if Huawei will rebrand its M series phones with a new name. No word yet on what this might be.
