It’s almost time for the 150th Race for the Roses – also known as the 2024 Kentucky Derby. The annual race will be run at Churchill Downs, Kentucky on Saturday, May 4, and all 20 runners are expected to exit the gates around 6:45 PM ET. The Kentucky Derby post-location drawing took place last Saturday, and the odds for the most-watched horse racing event of the year are already in. The Run for the Roses returns for the 150th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Coverage of the 150th Round of Roses will begin on race day as early as 12 noon ET. The actual Kentucky Derby will not start until after 6:30. The current official Kentucky Derby race time is 6:57 p.m

The Kentucky Derby’s sister race, the Kentucky Oaks (a race for three-year-old thoroughbred fillies), will be held the day before the 150th Kentucky Derby, on Friday, May 3.

The Kentucky Oaks Fillies’ Race will be broadcast on USA Network and streamed live on Peacock the day before the 2024 Derby. Coverage of the race will air from 1 to 6 p.m. ET.

The Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 miles of racing (or 10 furlongs). Time-wise, the actual race time for the Derby usually hovers around Two minutes (only two horses have run in the Kentucky Derby in less than two minutes). But coverage of the 2024 race will begin early noon EST on Saturday.

This year, the winner of the Run for the Roses will receive part of a record $5 million. The prize money, or purse, is divided among the top five finishers in the race.

Here’s how the prize money is divided:

First place: $3.1 million

Second place: $1 million

Third place: $500,000

Fourth place: $250,000

Fifth place: $150,000

The prize money for the winner of the Kentucky Derby is typically divided as follows: 80% of the winning purse is awarded to the owner(s) of the winning horse, and the winning trainer receives 10%. The winning rider also gets 10%.
