Over the past several years of Pixel phones, none have supported the ability to use the USB-C port to put anything on an external display. But with the latest Android 14 beta, Google has finally enabled display output on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
Some previous Pixel smartphones had the necessary hardware to output the display, but disabled it completely. In the Pixel 8 series, Google left the functionality a bit closer to live streaming, but connecting to an external display did nothing.
However, that's changing now, as Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 brings the ability to mirror the Pixel 8's screen to an external display via USB-C.
Robot body Certain Without modification, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro support connecting to an external display using the latest beta version of Android. When connected to a display, your phone now shows a prompt asking if you want to “View to an external display.” The connected display then displays your Pixel display in the center of the screen with the wallpaper extended to cover the rest of the empty space.
This comes at a time when Android is still building out a “Desktop Mode,” which has been in the works for a long time now.
As for whether or not this will eventually launch with the final appearance of Android 14 QPR3 later this year remains to be seen, but that's for sure. big Move to support official display output on Pixel.
