The Colombian Navy has rescued five Venezuelan migrants, including a pregnant woman and a two-year-old boy, who were abandoned by human traffickers on a Colombian Caribbean island.
The head of the specific command of San Andrés and Providencia, the captain of the ship Carlos Solano Parada, said the smugglers stole the migrants’ money and abandoned them at Cayo Pescador, located on the island of Cayo Albuquerque in San Andrés. Solano revealed that human traffickers tricked the migrants, saying they would transport them from San Andres to a part of Central America.
He explained that the rescue operation occurred when marines stationed at Albuquerque Key notified the San Andrés Operations Center of suspicious persons at Pescador Key, for which they dispatched personnel to the location.
“It’s a fishing boat, and from my heart I never felt safe, never! But it’s the risk a person takes to fulfill a dream. Many win, others lose,” said one of the rescued, the Colombian Navy quoted in a statement.
After checking their health, the Venezuelans were transferred to the San Andrés Coast Guard Station and made available to Migración Colombia.
