49ers GM John Lynch had a lot of things to say on Monday about Debo Samuel continent. Although Lynch consistently refused to discuss how the relationship moved to the point of Debo placing a trade order, Lynch said enough to allow for the conclusion that if the 49 clients got an offer they couldn’t refuse, they wouldn’t.
Here’s the main line from the text provided by the team: “We’ve been consistent since we’ve been here listening to just about anyone. It’s something we’ll always do.”
In other words, Depo is untouchable. However, it will be difficult to touch it. Twice, Lynch said he could never imagine moving on from Depo. This means that it will take the kind of show Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan can’t imagine in order to launch a deal.
“He’s a very good player,” Lynch said. “You think about 2019, the 36th choice, to create someone like Deebo who, to me, was just a game-changer for our franchise. I told Deebo this, I think it’s the perfect illustration. Herm Edwards used to talk about when you’re going to meet the skill, you have a chance to be special. And I think Debo probably embodies that like everyone else, he has tremendous will, he’s a very talented player. I think by the way he plays he’s inspiring and so, for me, that entails leadership. Do you make the people around you better? This box. He’s a great teammate. And I think about things like before games, he’s out there and he’s always throwing the ball with the fans. I think he was a great member of our community, so we have nothing but love for him and nothing but appreciation for what he bought, but you only Don’t let men like this walk. I can’t imagine a scenario where we would do it.”
But Lynch surely would have said three months ago that he couldn’t envision a scenario where Samuel didn’t want to be part of the team anymore, so he wouldn’t be a member of the community. Although it is still unknown how this happened, the truth is that the 49ers somehow failed to ensure that they had the right relationship with Samuel. If they don’t, he won’t want to go out.
Lynch said 49 of those who spoke to Samuel. The 49 players at this point will probably hope to get past the draft and hope Deboth realizes he has no real options, if he wants to play football in 2022.
However, it’s hard to have much faith in the team’s handling of Samuel going forward, given that their earlier efforts led to Samuel not wanting to be part of the team.
