Americans can help refugees adjust to life in the U.S. through a new program launched by the U.S. State Department.

Thursday’s planned announcement of a program called Welcome Corps (Welcome Corps) is part of the Joe Biden administration’s plan to deal with the influx of immigrants.

The agency aims to hire 10,000 Americans who could help 5,000 refugees in the program’s first year.

“By enhancing the goodwill of American communities, Welcome Corps will expand our nation’s ability to warmly welcome large numbers of refugees,” according to the announcement.

The State Department already works with aid groups that specialize in refugee issues to help people from around the world when they first arrive in the country and face a completely different way of life.

According to the plan, five or more Americans can form a team and fulfill this role.

Those interested will apply to sponsor refugees in the U.S. and will be responsible for raising their own resources to help them during their first 90 days in the country.

This assistance includes everything from getting them a place to live to enrolling the children in schools.

Initiative in two phases

The State Department said the new measure will be developed in two phases.

Under the first phase, individual sponsors will be matched with refugees already approved for resettlement under the US Refugee Assistance Program. It will start in the first half of 2023.

In the second phase of the program, private sponsors can identify refugees abroad and then refer those individuals to the Refugee Assistance Program to assist them when they arrive in the United States.

President Joe Biden announced an executive order in 2021 to restore the United States as the world’s refuge and called on private sponsors of refugees.
