Ron Rivera says Terry McLaurin’s extension affects the entire Washington Leaders Organization

The drumbeat of the Congressional story overshadowed other field regulatory news. When McLaurin skipped the OTA volunteer in the field and then the mandatory three-day mini-camp, fans feared more bad news was on their way. McLaurin worked his way up from a third-round pick in 2019 — expected to be a major player in the Specials and a reserve recipient — to a man with two seasons with 1,000 yards in his first three.

Rivera to McLaurin stressed his importance to the organization in a phone call during a small camp—when McLaurin was training in Florida.

“He stressed that the priority from ownership down is to get the deal done,” McLaurin said.

By the time Washington left the small camp on June 16, there was optimism that MacLaurin would soon be extended. He agreed to his three-year contract worth up to $71 million — with a signing bonus of $28 million — last week and signed it on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Rivera focused on McClurin’s signature about the way he said the organization had changed in the past two years, weeding out others in key locations who had been accused of sexual harassment.

“As I ask, please don’t judge us who, ‘This happened at this point in time,’” Rivera said. “We are moving forward. We change things. We try to do our best. I know some people don’t think it matters, but it does. It shows that you can change, you can adapt, you can improve things. You can correct your mistakes, and that’s what we do. We correct our mistakes; And we get a lot of support. “

MacLaurin thrived in Washington even though he initially played with eight different players. After finishing 919 yards as a rookie, he passed 1,000 yards in each of the next two seasons.

In the past two seasons combined, McLaurin ranked 11th in the NFL with 2,171 yards and 12th with 164 receptions.

This is also why it has been essential for Rivera as he juggles field planning with off-field news.

“We are doing everything we can to put the best players in positions so that we can build something that we can all be proud of,” Rivera said. “I get a little upset about it because I get it, it’s news. What we do in the field is important; it’s what we’re trying to do. We’re not trying to say that what happened isn’t important because it’s something we need to make sure to move forward socially that we don’t let these things happen. Again, so we’re doing everything we can to make sure we’re the best.”

McLaurin said he and other team leaders tried to look forward.

“We’re confident in coach Rivera’s vision and how he’s leading us,” said McLaurin. “He does a great job dealing with it and taking all the pressure from outside voices. … We represent the organization in the best way possible both on and off the field.
