Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey win the famous golf match against Steph Curry and Klay Thompson

For the NFL, late June is a good time to not compete. Unless that competition is completely fabricated and has nothing to do with football.

Enter the latest edition of The Match, a golf tournament that began as two teams consisting of a professional golfer and a professional athlete from another sport became a foursome of non-golfers in a two-on-two battle. Last year it was Old Goats (Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady) against Young Guns (Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen). This year, teammates from their respective sports became teammates at the competition in Las Vegas.

And so it was Mahomes and Travis Kelsey of the Chiefs, against Steve Curry and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. Mahomes and Kelsey won.

Kelsey’s post-victory quote was definitely on-brand I come back here in february

He said via CNN.com, referring to the fact that the next Super Bowl will be held in the same city.

Mahomes was also on the brand, using the event as another example of the value of teamwork.

“We knew going into this that if I played decently, we’d have a chance,” Mahomes said, on CNN.com. “Steve is a great golfer, I thought Clay did a good job out there today. But they didn’t have that collegiate side that we had…. Literally, I’d hit a horrible putt, and Trav would hit a great putt and vice versa. That’s what it takes for a team event like this That and I think we went out there and showed what we can do.”

And Mahomes will undoubtedly find a way to use last night’s golf rivalry to further his relationship with Kelce, making it hard to beat them when the 2023 season begins and the Chiefs try to become the first team to repeat since the 2003-2004 Patriots.
