Cretin-Derham Hall defeats Farmington by late 3-pointer

Cretin-Derham Hall beat Farmington 57-56 in the Class 4A Division II quarterfinals Wednesday at Target Center.

Myles Bollinger's 3-pointer with 40 seconds left provided the Raiders didn't give up the lead.

Questionable shot selection added to Cretin-Derham Hall's woes down the stretch, and Bollinger's trend of unsuccessful forced shots seemed likely to continue. He faltered as he was released.

“I was kind of falling to my left, but I was in a rhythm and I was kind of feeling it, so I let it go,” Bollinger said.

A defensive stop sealed the victory.

“We've been battle-tested because we've played in a lot of games like this,” Bollinger said. “We hung out on defense while our guys were digging in.”

No. 5 seed Cretin-Derham Hall (25-4) advances to the semifinals Thursday at 6 p.m. at Williams Arena and will face Wayzata, the defending Class 4A champion.

Cretin Derham Hall led 31-28 at halftime. No. 4 seed Farmington (23-7), in the state tournament for the first time since 1937, led 52-51 with 3:44 left in the second half.

Joseph Mitchell III, a Star Tribune All-Metro third-team selection of the Raiders, fouled out with 1:10 remaining and a game-high 23 points.

The freshman pushes DeLaSalle beyond Orono

DeLaSalle's Jaeden Udean is a freshman. He doesn't play like that.

The 6-2 guard went out and buried a 3-pointer from between the college 3-point line and the big “M” at midcourt with 6 minutes, 14 seconds remaining. And he didn't celebrate. He calmly ran to a defensive position, although not very far.

Udean's 23 points carried No. 5-seeded DeLaSalle to a 70-64 win over Orono in the Class 3A quarterfinals on Wednesday at Williams Arena.

“He made some shots that lit a fire under us,” DeLaSalle coach Todd Anderson said. “His threes are like dunks. They go in.”

Udean finished 5-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Richard Abiajeyi added 10 points for the Islanders (21-9). Five other teammates scored between six and eight points.

“We like to share the ball,” said Islander senior Ray James Jr., who finished with six points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. “When one person calms down, another player steps up.”

The Islanders didn't have to worry about that at the free throw line. They went 16-for-17, all but one of them coming in the second half.

“They hit some big free throws at the end,” Orono coach Barry Fuller said.

Junior guard Nolan Groves scored 18 points against the Islanders' ever-changing man-to-man defense, outscoring four Spartans (19-11) by double figures.

“We missed some shots that we would normally take,” Fuller said. “We had some good chances in the second half that we missed. We came up short, but it wasn't for lack of effort.”

Wayzata sends Rogers

After making quick work of the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, top-seeded Wayzata ran away for a 77-64 win over Rogers at Target Center.

Jackson McAndrew, the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year, tied Isaac Olmstead for the team lead with 17 points. Olmstead had six assists.

Christian Wagner-Walthall led Rogers (21-9) with 14 points.

Wayzata (28-1) shot 59.2 percent, going 29-for-49 overall and 7-for-16 on 3-pointers. The Trojans outshot the Royals 32-25.

Wayzata, the defending 4A state champion, led 38-27 at halftime. The Trojans advance to the semifinals on Thursday at 6pm at Williams Arena to face Cretin-Derham Hall.

Totino Grace makes a late lead from Stewartville

Two words that could pose problems for Totino Grace.

Senior Isaiah Johnson-Arrigo used his experience to save the Eagles on Wednesday. The 6-7 forward scored seven points and had an assist, sparking a late 11-point run over seven minutes as the two-time state champion Eagles beat Stewartville 57-48 in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Williams Arena. .

“Once things settled down, I focused on winning,” said Johnson-Arrigo, who finished with 13 points, including 11 in the second half. “It was our first game. We had to get used to the pressure.”

The top-ranked Eagles (25-5) trailed 42-39 when junior goaltender Chase Whatley scored on a corner kick with just over eight minutes left in the game. Johnson-Arrigo, a first-team All-Metro selection who signed with Miami (Fla.), took over from that point on, scoring on an offensive rebound and a fast layup, passing to Dothan Ejadembola for a layup and a free layup. Throwing before ending the run by throwing the ball again.

“Our defense turned into offense,” Eagles coach Nick Carroll said. “We wanted to make the game faster.”

Totino-Grace's defense held the Tigers (26-4) without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes, from 11:02 remaining to 1:28 left.

“We hit a slump,” said Stewartville senior guard Henry Tschetter, who scored 15 points and is the only Tigers player in double figures. “We didn't move the ball like we did the whole game.”

The Tigers, ranked third in the state, used a well-executed game plan, a disciplined offensive attack and three defenses, to open a 41-36 lead on Tschetter's layup with 11:02 remaining. They alternated between a 2-3 boxed area, a 3-2 zone and a man-to-man defence.

“We were confused,” Johnson Arrigo said. “We got used to it during the game.”

Watley added 13 points and junior forward Tyler Wagner scored 12 points for the Eagles. Wagner scored his final eight points in the first half, finishing off the game with a stunning shot after a pass from Ejadimbula.

“These guys have been through the ringer,” Carroll said. “I don't care if we score eight or 85 points, a win is a win.”
