Logan Ohope needs shoulder surgery and will miss 4-6 months

Anaheim — Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe’s promising rookie season may end soon after it begins. O’Hoppe was diagnosed with a torn left shoulder on Sunday, and is expected to miss 4-6 months.

The Angels placed O’Hoppe on the injured list on Friday after he left the game in the ninth inning after one out. An injury halted the 23-year-old’s 16-game season after he was hitting . 283 with four homers and 13 RBI — looking every bit of his MVP status.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” Uhope said. “You do everything you can to make sure that doesn’t happen. One thing I’ve been telling myself the past couple of days is that sitting around feeling sorry for myself isn’t going to help any situation.”

O’Hoppe first showed discomfort in his shoulder in a Series in Boston last weekend, then left Thursday’s road game against the New York Yankees after he fell to the ground in pain after a swing.

“He’s obviously got off to a great start and has a bright, bright future,” said Angels general manager Perry Minassian. “For him and his profession, and for us as an organization, the best thing for him is to fix the thing and fix it. He has a chance to be a very good player.”

The Angels acquired O’Hoppe from the Philadelphia Phillies on August 2 of last year in exchange for outfielder Brandon Marsh. A native of New York, O’Hoppe developed as a top prospect after he was drafted by the Phillies in the 23rd round in 2018.
