Miami — Nearly 6,000 students from more than a dozen different Jewish schools in South Florida gathered at Loan Miami Depot Park to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Israel’s founding on Wednesday.
Students filled the stands for what organizers said was the most attended Israeli anniversary event in the entire world.
All 22 Jewish schools from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties participated in the celebration.
In addition to experiencing interactive games and musical performances, the students also got the chance to take part in a big show, with each school representing a different Israeli city.
The organizers said they spent more than a year putting the event together.
Someone said the goal was to give the students a chance to feel a sense of community while also getting together to celebrate their heritage at a monumental and historic event.
“Honestly, it’s all about the kids because the adults are really well set in their ways,” said event organizer Tina Valek-Levy. “Our idea is to create within them this feeling of love, passion, solidarity and unity.”
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levin Cava, the county’s first Jewish mayor, was scheduled to address the ceremony.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to appear in a video message.
