Video game developer ‘Halo Infinite’ is under fire for coming up with a new nameplate to honor Juneteenth… People are furious about naming customization after a monkey.
The folks at 343 Industries seem to have thought that it would be a good idea to name the nameplate – a board that adds a red, black, and green colored path to a player’s username – “Bonobo”… which is an endangered primate.
The problem is…people were pissed off about the monkeys’ association with Juneteenth, given the racist and discriminatory history of these words and blacks.
You know… Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, commemorating the last day enslaved Americans got the news. President Lincoln abolished slavery.
In response to the backlash, the video game developer renamed the board to “Freedom” and then to “Juneteenth.”
343 Industries says the board was originally called “Bonobo” in reference to a developer’s tool — and they claim it was an oversight on their part.
Bonnie Rossfounder and president of 343 Industries, said that once they learned the board “contained a term that was offensive and harmful” they immediately made a change by updating the game.
Ross adds… “We are a studio and franchise committed to inclusivity where everyone is welcomed and supported to be their true selves. On behalf of 343, I apologize for making this celebratory moment a painful one.”
