Brazilian federal police on Wednesday raided former President Jair Bolsonaro’s home and seized his phone as part of an investigation into alleged falsification of vaccination certificates against Covid-19.

Authorities also searched several websites and media houses of people who could be arrested.

The former president gave permission to search his residence in a statement to reporters, and his wife Michelle did so through her account. Instagram, And stated that contrary to media reports his phone was not seized.

A federal police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said Bolsonaro would be called to testify at federal police headquarters and that one of his close associates, Mauro Cid, had been arrested.

Asked about the raid on Bolsonaro’s home, the Federal Police press office said agents were carrying out 16 data entry-related raids and six arrests in Rio de Janeiro. .

Neither Bolsonaro nor Cid were mentioned in the report.

Local media reported that the vaccination cards of Bolsonaro, his advisers and their relatives had been altered. During the pandemic, Bolsonaro expressed doubts about the vaccine’s effectiveness and refused to inject himself.

In September 2021, there were questions about whether he would be able to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

“There was no damage on my part, it didn’t happen,” Bolsonaro told reporters after the raid at his home on Wednesday. “I’m not vaccinated, period. I don’t deny it at all.”

The trial adds to Bolsonaro’s increasingly strong legal woes. Federal police have questioned him twice in the past month at their Brasilia headquarters in connection with separate investigations.

First for three sets of diamond jewelry he received as a gift from Saudi Arabia, then for his possible role in inciting the January 8 uprising by his supporters in the capital.

Bolsonaro has been the subject of several investigations by Brazil’s electoral court into his actions during his presidential campaign, particularly his unsubstantiated claims that the country’s electronic voting system was vulnerable to fraud.

This deprives him of his political rights and prevents him from contesting the upcoming elections.
