Bo Jackson was suffering in a broken silence.

He said Wednesday over the past week that the multi-sports legend will undergo surgery later this week to address a bout of chronic falls that he has dealt with since July 2022. Appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on WJOX-FM.

When asked about seeing fellow Auburn legend Frank Thomas Dedication of the statue at Plainsman Park in AprilAnd Jackson revealed that he didn’t show up because he was busy dealing with hiccups:

“I wasn’t there because I had to deal with the hiccups. I’ve had hiccups since last July, and I think a medical procedure was performed this weekend to try and cure it. I’ve been busy sitting in the hospital with the doctor squeezing me, flashing lights in my throat, and checking me in every possible way to see The reason I have these hiccups. It’s the only reason I’m not there.”

He was later asked if the doctors had discovered the cause of the condition. They don’t, and Jackson seems to have tried remedies from clichés to, um, bizarre:

“Hell no. You’ve done it all: scare me, hang upside down, drink water, smell the ass of a porcupine. It just doesn’t work.”

This sounds like a miserable tryout for the former NFL Pro Bowler and MLB All-Star. Hopefully, the procedure will take care of this problem, otherwise Jackson could end up on chronic hiccup records, which he leads Charles Osborne and his 68-year-old case of hiccups.

The causes of hiccups can be incredibly mysterious with a wide range of possible causes, which is usually not a problem when it goes away after a few minutes, but it can make cases like Jackson’s a real ordeal.

Jackson has been enjoying retirement since 1994 and continues to enjoy the unique legend of perhaps the most athletic person to step onto a baseball field, and one of the fastest people to run the ball in the NFL. He spent nine seasons in MLB with the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels and played four seasons in the NFL with the Los Angeles Raiders.
