Castro, whose credits include “Ugly Betty” and “Bride and Prejudice,” said he considers Roth a mentor.

“She’s special,” Gerwig said. “She said, ‘Greta, I don’t know if I can do it, I can’t do it!’” Just give me a martini.

“She loves martinis,” Castro laughed.

At that point, Noah Baumbach, Gerwig's husband, had made his way to her and they made their way to the bar. (But they didn't order a martini.)

Kinergy in the lobby (and on stage)

About a half-hour before Gosling turned the Oscars into a very entertaining concert for a few precious minutes, the Caines were in the lobby warming up. Some were wearing cowboy hats, they were stretching, some were running in place, and everyone was finding their energy.

During the show, the Dolby Theater took on the feel of a Taylor Swift concert, with everyone in the room standing up and doing a spontaneous, cheerful dance. The biggest fan in the room was Gerwig, who got her personal Kane straight to her face.

During a commercial break, Mark Ronson found his way to Gerwig, Robbie and a crowd of fans. The whole room was buzzing long after the show, Ronson perhaps most of all – he returned to his seat proudly wearing the pink Kane T-shirt he'd been wearing for the rest of the show.

Open moment

The Oppenhomies stayed on stage for a few minutes after the cameras went off, hugging and celebrating all the wins. Downey raised his glass while doing some fist pumps. Among the last to take the stage were Emily Blunt and Kimmel, who casually chatted and made their way out.

When the show is over, the evening has just begun

On the way to the Governors Ball, Cord Jefferson was beaming as he walked through the lobby, jumping and clutching his Oscar. Kate McKinnon spent a moment with Marlee Matlin and Steven Spielberg and they stepped out wearing a mask.

Although Gerwig and Barbie returned home mostly empty-handed, she was in high spirits, still rocking the song “I'm Just Ken,” which she described as “legendary.”
