Around 20 rotting bodies found inside boat in Brazil (+VIDEO)

A driftwood boat with 20 mutilated bodies was found over the weekend off the coast of the Amazon state of Para, the Public Ministry echoed.

However, there is still no exact official confirmation on the number of victims.

The boat was found in a difficult-to-access area near Ajurutua beach in Bragança, 215 kilometers from the state capital Belem.

The rescue operation lasted for more than 12 hours as the wave action was difficult.

Early this Monday morning, the boat was finally towed to dry land. The first hypotheses suggested that the victims were foreigners, as no ship was found in Brazil.

The Public Ministry has already started an investigation to clarify the nationality of the deceased and the cause of death.

Local newspaper O libera, citing a source from the Federal Police, indicated that the boat came from somewhere in Africa.

“An examination of the boat and preliminary analysis of the bodies will be carried out to confirm or disprove the hypothesis that the boat came from Africa,” the source explained.

Officials also did not rule out that they were Haitian refugees.
