Accusers of video game writer Chris Avellone release public statement retracting allegations of sexual assault

In June of 2021, I reported on the defamation lawsuit that video game writer Chris Avellone brought against two women who accused Avellone of sexual assault on Twitter. Avellone publicly denied the accusations and announced that he would prosecute the two women for their statements.

Now, nearly two years later, the case is settled. Avellone’s accusers, Carissa Barrows and Kelly Bristol, have signed a joint statement retracting their previous social media allegations and exonerating Avellone of any wrongdoing. The seven-figure payment to Avellone is part of a confidential settlement between the parties.

in Blog post titled Shared statement from Carissa Barrows, Kelly Bristol, and Chris Avellone:

The parties resolved the matter and the claims were dismissed with prejudice under a confidential settlement providing for the payment of a seven-figure sum including the return of the attorneys’ fees awarded against Mr. Avellone in California.

“I understand that Ms. Barrows has requested that her comments to the media about me be withdrawn.”

I have received a copy of the statement below from Mr. Avellone’s attorney.

Barrows and Bristol’s statement reads:

After dealing with Mr. Avellone, we prepared the following statement:

“Mr. Avellone never sexually assaulted any of us. We have no knowledge that he sexually assaulted any women. We have no knowledge that Mr. Avellone misused company funds. Anything we said or wrote previously about Mr. Avellone other than that was not our intention. We wanted Supporting women in the industry. In doing so, our words have been misinterpreted to refer to specific allegations of misconduct that were neither expressed nor intended. We are passionate about the safety, security, and agency of women, minorities, LGBTQIA+ people, and every other community that has experienced oppression in the video game industry. We believe Mr. Avellone subscribes to Desire to protect and uplift these communities. We believe he deserves a full return to industry and we support him in those endeavours.”

Carissa Barrows, Kelly Ray Bristol

Avalon’s statement on the matter reads as follows:

“I appreciate Ms Barrows and Ms Bristol’s willingness to work with us in addressing issues within the game community, and their support and support should be commended.

There are still many real challenges that we face but I am confident that we can face them together.

In the spirit of these goals, I would like to ask everyone to respect the privacy of Ms. Barrows and Ms. Bristol and to use this opportunity as a way to listen to all voices in improving our culture and communities.”

– Chris Avellone

Barrows had earlier alleged on Twitter that Avellone was an “abusive, abrasive, conniving and sexual predator” who attempted to sexually assault her after getting her “drunk”.

Avellone is fired from his job, which he is working on dying light 2 When the accusations arose and he was widely blacklisted from the industry after decades of working on dozens of popular video games including several role-playing games such as Pillars of Eternity, Icewind Dale And Fallout 2.
