A new 4K Chromecast with Google TV is coming

A new 4K Chromecast with Google TV is coming

Back in March, we reported that Google was working on a new Chromecast device powered by Android 9to5Google It can now be confirmed that it will be a sequel to the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV 4K.

According to a source, Google is gearing up to launch a new Chromecast with Google TV. It will retain the 4K resolution of the current $49.99 model and comes with a new remote.

This comes nearly four years after the original model was introduced and nearly two years after the HD follow-up, which some hoped would be a new, top-tier model. (On that note, after selling for $19.99 after a $10 rebate, the Chromecast with Google TV HD is now available out of stock in Many retailers.)

Now we finally get a Chromecast with Google TV 4K alternative. The model from 2020 has a 1.9GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor (Amlogic S905X3) with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The latter specifications were a sticking point, while performance can only be described as good.

What we get this year will certainly be an upgrade, but keep in mind the price point Google is trying to reach with its streaming devices. One possibility to use the chip is the Amlogic S905X5 which was announced last September. It's two generations later than the current 4K Chromecast chip, with a more efficient 6nm process (up from 12nm) and AV1 support.

Meanwhile, last year, Android TV 14 Beta revealed the new Chromecast Voice Remote. A video embedded with the build showed something with the same pill-shaped design with a D-pad on top but more buttons. The volume rocker on the right edge has been moved to the face of the remote, while there's a new star/'magic' button, which can give users a personalized shortcut.

Speaking of the operating system, the current model remains on Android 12, with Android 14 being the most likely upgrade after Google ditched Android TV 13. Recent updates have added Fast Pair, an audio output adapter, and tweaks to the home screen.
