Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated from an event in the west of the country after hearing a bomb, but is safe.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. local time at the port of Wakayama city, where Kishida was scheduled to give a campaign speech, where a loud explosion was reported and a column of white smoke was observed. Hundreds of people gathered to hear him speak.
“I saw something being fired, but I managed to escape and I could hear the explosion at that time,” the prime minister said, adding that despite the incident, “he will continue with his election activities as scheduled today.” Tomorrow.”
“We are going to hold an important election for our country and we must work together to carry it out,” Kishida said in another campaign speech near Wakayama train station this Saturday, about an hour and ten minutes after the incident, which he also mentioned in his address.
Japanese authorities arrested a man who allegedly detonated the bomb at the scene, a metal cylinder that may have been a pipe bomb, according to eyewitnesses and images captured by the media.
