Amazon is adding a way for customers to show their appreciation to delivery drivers during the busy holiday season.
Starting December 7, customers with a package delivered from Amazon can say “Alexa, thank my driver” on their Alexa-enabled device or the Amazon app and the delivery driver will receive a thank you note. The first 1 million drivers to receive a thank you will also receive a $5 tip at no cost to the customer, Amazon announced.
The five drivers receiving the most thanks will also receive a $10,000 bonus, plus $10,000 donated to the charity of their choice. The company says it celebrates the drivers’ hard work and how they’ve helped the company deliver 15 billion packages since 1994, building a community with customers along the way.
Advertising comes just like that The news broke that Amazon is being sued of the District of Columbia for allegedly stealing driver tips.
The lawsuit cites a Federal Trade Commission complaint issued in 2021. The complaint alleged that Amazon changed its payment policies in 2016 in a way that meant drivers got less than 100% of their tips. Amazon He paid a fine of $61.7 million to settle the FTC claimwhich the agency will pass on to drivers.
But Amazon “has so far evaded proper accountability, including any civil penalties, for consumer harm,” said D.C. Attorney General Carl Racine, who filed the new lawsuit, he said in a statement. He is seeking those civil penalties as well as a court order to prevent Amazon from returning to the practice.
“Nothing is more important to us than customer trust,” Amazon spokeswoman Maria Bochetti told CNBC Make It in an emailed statement. “This lawsuit involves a practice we changed three years ago that is without merit – all customer tips in question were actually paid to the drivers as part of last year’s settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.”
