2,500-year-old Greek war helmet discovered

A 2,500-year-old Illyrian helmet was recently discovered in the Comilla Necropolis, located in Zagadorac, Croatia. Since the excavation project began in 2020, tombs dating back to the last millennium BC have been discovered in the area, according to local media.

This is the second Greco-Illyrian helmet found in the region. The earlier helmet was found in a tomb with fragments of iron weapons, so it is believed to have belonged to a member of the warrior elite buried at the site.

The new object was a section of stone attached to a tomb, so archaeologists believe it could be a votive deposit.

“The helmet was found 10 meters away in a straight line from where it was originally found. It's a little different, and it differs from the plates that are concluded to date back to the 5th-6th century BC, which means it's older than the first one, but more details need to be explored,” he said. Marta Kaleboda, archaeologist of the Korcula City Museum and member of the excavation team.

For his part, Professor Hrvoje Potrebic of the Department of Archeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb said, “It is interesting that two different types of helmets appear in the same place, which indicates the continuity of power in that society.”

“Those helmets were always a symbol of status and power,” he added.

Discovered in 2020, the helmet has a rectangular cutout for the face with a decorative border, which was once used in Greece and Illia, the ancient historical region of Europe.

To date, there are only a few examples of this type of helmet. About 40 are known in Europe and those from the 6th century BC are even rarer.
