Quiet Big News Announces Cross Licensing of All Osram and Philips Inorganic and Organic LEDs

In one of the shortest press releases we’ve seen in years, but packing what
could be huge news from two giant European lighting companies, on January 26th,
Osram GmbH and Philips announced that they jointly signed a cross license agreement
“covering optoelectronic semiconductors.” As stated in the Osram
news release
, “the agreement involves the mutual licensing of patents
for all inorganic and organic LED.” In it, Dr. Rudiger Muller, president and
CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH in Regensburg was quoted as saying, simply…
We expect this to put us in an even better position to use LED technology
to serve the demands of the market
.” And further, that… “The
agreement relates to patents held by Philips, including the US subsidiary Lumileds,
and by OSRAM including its subsidiary OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.” No other
